Every October, the Network organises what is usually the main event in its calendar – our Annual General Meeting and Seminar Weekend. The event is hosted by a different member-organisation each time and, in October 2007, the Strathclyde Fire Brigade Preservation Group welcomed some 49 delegates from 17 separate groups across the country.

The main proceedings took place at the Hamilton Headquarters of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, by courtesy of the Chief Officer. A number of interesting presentations were given, including the history of Glasgow Fire Service, the story of shipbuilding on the Clyde and an insight into airport fire fighting. On the “museum” side of things, members heard the Robert Logan Award winning presentation by Lucy Price of the London Fire Brigade Museum on the value of volunteers, as well as a fascinating talk by Will Murray the Scottish Conservation Studio.

Sunday is usually given over to a museum “study visit” and, this year, members travelled in style down the River Clyde to Greenock.

Here, we were privileged to receive a VIP tour of the, as yet, undeveloped site beneath the magnificent Town Hall where Strathclyde FBPG hopes to open its eagerly awaited museum in the not-too-distant future.

Members were also treated to a tour of the SFR Technical Training School, and a demonstration by the Trossachs Search and Rescue Dog.

After the main business of the afternoon – the AGM itself – members met up again at Headquarters for a traditional Scottish evening of entertainment, fine food and drink, with a performance by well-known Scottish folk group

The Wherries.

All in all, an excellent weekend combining education, sightseeing, business and the all-important “networking.”
